In 2006 Malaysia was selected as one of five Composite Depth Markets for the New Zealand international education industry.  In mid 2010, Education New Zealand developed the New Zealand Specialist Agent Group for Malaysia to provide a means by which effective agents can easily be identified by students and industry. At the same time, it aims to increase the effectiveness and commitment of those Agents promoting New Zealand education.

The Market Profile for Malaysia has been made available online and can assist with the setting of marketing strategies and decision making around event attendance. The latest Visa and Export Education Levy Statistics are sourced from The Department of Labour and The Ministry of Education respectively and are available on the Statistics page.

Fourteen New Zealand Education Providers participated in the New Zealand Education Fairs in Kuching, Penang and Petaling Jaya in March 2011. This included eight universities, three institutes of technology/polytechnics and three private training establishments.  A total of 921 people attended the 3 fair venues. Kuching received 228 people; Penang received an attendance of 159 people and Petaling Jaya totalling 534 people.

A ‘Study in New Zealand’ 12 foot by 41 foot billboard is displayed along the Taman Tun Dr. Ismail Highway.  The approximate traffic driving by the billboard is 450,000 per day, in a high profile neighborhood, near popular shopping malls, colleges, Media Prima TV broadcasting station and fast food outlets. Foot traffic is also possible due to the side pedestrian walkway, and nearby apartments and hostels.

One day New Zealand Education Fairs were held in the cities of Kota Kinabalu, Penang and Petaling Jaya (Kuala Lumpur).  Ten New Zealand providers participated in some or all of the fairs, 7 were from the  university sector, 1 was an ITP and 2 were PTEs.  The total numbers of visitors attracted to all three fairs was 1,153.

A 'Study in New Zealand' 12 foot by 41 foot banner is located by the Federal Highway.  The highway stretches from Kuala Lumpur all the way to Klang, passing through very prominent areas like Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, Damansara, Shah Alam and Klang. The approximate traffic driving by the billboard is 680,000 per day.

18 Malaysian agents took the test to qualify for New Zealand Specialist Agent status, after attending a full day of training.  Very positive feedback was received from the agents

Kuala Lumpur Bus Stop Advertising, 5 March - ongoing
A large five panel 'Study in New Zealand' display in a high traffic area of Petaling Jaya (KL).  All five panels together measure a total of 7m wide and 2m high.  The three New Zealand Educated brand images and two text panels together create a message with impact.  The text panels read Belajar di New Zealand, Study in New Zealand.  Approximately 200,000 cars drive by the bus stop per day.

Two Malaysian education agents (together with three Indonesian agents) were selected to travel to New Zealand for an 8-day familiarisation visit. Agents were able to learn about New Zealand’s culture and environment and visits to institutions in Auckland, Hamilton, Wanganui, Napier, Christchurch and Dunedin were organised to provide institutions interested in the Malaysian (and Indonesian) market with an opportunity to meet and establish agent contacts.
