In 2006 Germany was selected as one of five Composite Depth Markets for the New Zealand international education industry. In mid 2009, Education New Zealand developed the New Zealand Specialist Agent Group for Germany to provide a means by which effective agents can easily be identified by students and industry. At the same time, it aims to increase the effectiveness and commitment of those Agents promoting New Zealand education.

The latest Market Profiles for Germany, as well as other european countries have been made available online and can assist with the setting of marketing strategies and decision making around event attendance. The latest Visa and Export Education Levy Statistics are sourced from The Department of Labour and The Ministry of Education respectively and are available on the Statistics page.

The 7th International Fair for Higher and Continuing Education, organised by ICWE in co-operation with the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).  More than 180 exhibitors from at least 25 countries and more than 9,000 visitors are expected to participate.  More information can be found HERE

Wege ins Ausland, Cologne, 7 February 2012
New Zealand education promotions will take place at this tertiary focussed fair, to be held at the University of Cologne.  More than 70 national and international exhibitors participate annually, the majority are German education agents, country representatives, universities, cultural associations and youth organisations.  2,000 visitors are expected to attend.

ENZ had a stand at the College Day Hamburg 2011 representing NZ tertiary education.  The visitor number of just under 300 students during the 4 hour duration was a bit disappointing, however, the type of visitors was very good. Questions asked were very focussed. Main interest was expressed for undergraduate programmes – full degree as well as study abroad programmes.

International higher education professionals from around the world will meet in Copenhagen at the 23rd Annual EAIE Conference; the largest event of its kind in Europe. Hands-on workshops and cutting-edge sessions will highlight the latest trends in the field of international education.  A generic New Zealand Education booth will be set up for kiwis to use as a meeting point or base. Student Fair Bargteheide, 3 September 2011
Student Fair Bargteheide is amongst the biggest fairs for secondary education abroad in Germany. Bargteheide is located just outside of Hamburg which incorporates around 2 million inhabitants.  The fair attracted just under 2,000 visitors. 48 German secondary education agents and 3 country representatives (US Consulate, Canadian Embassy, and ENZ) exhibited at the fair.  Since the fair was concentrating on secondary education only, most inquiries were expressed for school stays abroad during upper secondary school for 6 to 18 months. Some interest was shown for achieving the university entrance qualification NCEA in New Zealand. Inquiries for English language courses were modest.

30 German secondary education agents, information offices and country representatives (ENZ, Canadian Embassy) exhibited at the fair which attracted 1,500 visitors.  Interest to the ENZ stand was good. In general, visitors appreciated neutral information from an independent organisation like ENZ. Since the fair was concentrating on secondary education only, most interest was expressed for school stays abroad for 6 to 12 months during upper secondary school. It was also registered that a number of students were interested in the possibility of gaining NCEA UE while in NZ.  Some interest was shown for undergraduate programmes at NZ universities and institutes of technology/polytechnics.

The 6th annual International Fair for Higher and Continuing Education took place in Berlin.  8,628 students attended, Education New Zealand promoted New Zealand Education at a generic booth with a few industry reps.  Further information about this International Education Fair is available on the Study World website HERE. It was organised by ICWE in cooperation with the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).  This fair is tertiary focused; senior high school and university students are the main target audience for this event.

Secondary Student Fair, Hamburg, 7 May 2011
New Zealand Education was promoted from a generic stand at this fair which attracted just over 1,000 visitors.  Visitors seemed to appreciate neutral information from an independent organisation.  A presentation on the benefits of studying in New Zealand was given as part of the day’s programme. Since the fair was concentrating on secondary education only, all interest was expressed for school stays abroad for 6 to 12 months during upper secondary school. It was interesting to note that many students were interested in the possibility of gaining NCEA UE while in NZ.

The May edition of this tertiary student focused magazine will have a special focus on studying and travelling abroad, a 1/4 page advertisement promotes New Zealand's research strengths in tertiary study.  The 'Trusted' image of the PhD Biology student will reflect this academic focus.  This is the most well known tertiary focused magazine in Germany, with 400,000 copies distributed directly to tertiary institutions throughout Germany.

More than 500 Study in New Zealand advertisements will appear on the UBahn city and underground trains in Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt and Munich for two months.  The size of the colourful promotions vary from city to city with the largest being 166cm wide, so difficult for commuters to miss.  The promotions were especially placed on train routes that arrive at schools and tertiary institutions and therefore will be noticed by a high number of secondary and tertiary students as well as parents, educators and other influencers.  The 'welcoming' brand image was used alongside brief information about New Zealand Education, www.newzealandeducated.com is the call to action.

The one-day event is organised by the German education agent and New Zealand Specialist Agent, GOstralia!-GOzealand! who offers free consulting services for tertiary study programmes exclusively in Australia and New Zealand. The exibitors were made up of  four New Zealand universities, 17 Australian universities, Tourism Victoria, Austrade (Australian Trade Commission), and the South Australian Tourism Commission. The event attracted a good amount of visitors, approximately 1,800 students were counted.

This fair attracted approximately 2,000 visitors. 38 German secondary education agents, 9 information offices and 2 country representatives (ENZ, Canadian Embassy) exhibited at the fair.  Interest in the New Zealand Education stand was great. Since the fair was concentrating on secondary education only, all interest was expressed for school stays abroad for 6 to 12 months during upper secondary school. Many students were interested in the possibility of gaining the NZ qualification NCEA Level 3 (UE).

A generic booth promoting New Zealand Education generically was part of this fair, organised by a non-commercial education consultancy.  Visitor numbers were strong, approx. 1,800 were recorded and 46 exhibitors participated in the event.  Most interest was expressed for secondary education programmes for a period of 6 to 12 months.

 

SB_photoStudie Beurs Education Fair, Utrecht, 14 - 16 October 2010
A generic booth promoted New Zealand Education at this tertiary focussed fair, held in Utrecht, the Netherlands.  ENZ last participated in late 2008 and found it to be a great opportunity to encourage Dutch, Belgian and German students to consider a New Zealand education.  128 exhibitors displayed their services at Studie Beurs 2010. 13,648 visitors attended the fair.  Besides interest in full postgraduate degrees and study abroad programmes, most interest was expressed by visitors at the New Zealand stand in full undergraduate degree courses, this may be due to the fact that the Dutch government grant system allows Dutch students to study their full degree abroad.

 

CROWDSecondary Student Fair, Bargteheide, Germany, 18 September 2010
This student fair was held at a local high-school from 10 am to 4 pm. A New Zealand Education booth and a standalone seminar promoted New Zealand Secondary education options, both were very well attended.  The fair attracted approximately 3,500 visitors. As many as 43 German education agents & information offices and 2 country representatives (ENZ, Canadian Embassy) exhibited at the fair.  Interest in the New Zealand stand was immense, all interest was expressed for school stays abroad for 6 to 12 months during upper secondary school. Many students were interested in the possibility of gaining NCEA Level 3 (UE).

German Inbound Agent & Media Visit, June 2010
In June, five German education agents and two media representatives were hosted in New Zealand as part of the Air New Zealand sponsored programme. The travellers visited a range of institutions and enjoyed chatting to German students already in New Zealand.  One group ventured to the far South and even visited Stewart Island.

This one day fair attracted approximately 1,000 visitors.  Thirty German secondary education agents and information offices and three country representatives (New Zealand, New South Wales Dept of Ed & Training and Canada) exhibited at the fair.  Most queries at the New Zealand booth were about school stays for 6 to 12 months at senior secondary school level.  There were also a couple of queries about the working holiday scheme.

This is an annual event that takes place in a different German city each year, the seventh event of this kind.  Organised by a NZSA education agent, with a tertiary focus, most interest was shown for study abroad programmes in courses such as communication, management, economics, (mechanical) engineering, technology and IT.  Approximately 1,000 visitors attended.  The event took place at Cologne's University of Applied Sciences.

A 'Neuseeland' booth promoted New Zealand Education at the 5th International Fair for Higher and Continuing Education.  Over the two days 7,584 visitors met with 180 exhibitors from 29 countries.  Almost all exhibitors were tertiary education providers, institutes of research or culture, or education agencies.  3 New Zealand institutions (CPIT, Otago Poly & SIT) and a regional group (Study Nelson) were represented by their agents on the 'Neuseeland' booth.  The Fair website can be accessed HERE

New Zealand Education was represented at this large fair which catered for 356 exhibitors from 12 countries.  The fair targeted secondary school students in their last years of study.  Six Einstieg Abi fairs are held annually in the biggest hubs in Germany: Cologne, Hamburg, Karlsruhe, Munich, Frankfurt and Berlin.  Most interest was shown for tertiary Study Abroad, UG & PG Programmes and secondary school courses.  The fair website is available HERE.  According to the organisers, around 28,000 visitors attended, roughly 14,000 on each of the two days.

A 1/3 page full colour advertisement was booked in this newspaper which targets 14 -21 year old German students.  360,000 printed copies were distributed to 5,000 High-Schools throughout Germany from 8th March.  The topics of the 08 March edition were: choosing courses of study, languages and German films.  The New Zealand Educated branded advertisement featured a ‘Welcoming’ brand image and text in German introducing the benefits of a New Zealand education.

New Zealand Education was promoted at this annual international fair, held at the University of Cologne.  Most of the enquiries at our booth were related to either Postgraduate or Secondary School study.  The fair catered for 80 exhibitors, over 2,500 visitors attended from 10am to 4pm.

GoOzGOstralia! GOzealand! Day, Augsburg (Bavaria), 26 November 2009
The 6th annual event organised by New Zealand Specialist Agent GOzealand!, who exclusively focus on Australia and New Zealand.  The exhibitors at this tertiary focussed event were 15 Australian universities and Education New Zealand.  The estimated 1,800 visitors were extremely focussed on studying in Australia or New Zealand. Interest in New Zealand was good. Most interest was shown for study abroad programmes in courses to become a teacher of languages (English, German), history or geography.

The annual Roadshow, managed by New Zealand Specialist Agent Ranke-Heinemann, was held in Vienna (14 Nov), Munich (16 Nov), Mannheim (17 Nov), Cologne (18 Nov), Hamburg (19 Nov) and Berlin (21 Nov). 25 Australian Universities and 8 New Zealand tertiary institutions took part.  Visitor numbers were slightly down on last year, the decrease was attributed to student protests at the time.

New Zealand Education was promoted at this fair, known as “the biggest fair for secondary education abroad in Germany”. Two presentations on secondary education in New Zealand were given as part of the seminar programme.  The fair attracted more than 2,000 visitors between the hours of 10am to 4pm. 45 German secondary education agents and 3 country representatives (ENZ, the US Consulate and Canadian Consulate) exhibited at the fair.  Interest in New Zealand was very strong.

This is the second time this fair has been organised and 20 education providers from around the world were represented. It was the first time New Zealand has been involved as an exploratory exercise. Education New Zealand also attended and presented at the NCEA Workshop Hamburg, the Info-Event High School New Zealand in Berlin, the College Days in Berlin, the Secondary Student Exchange Fair in Grosshansdorf, Wege ins Ausland Cologne, NZ Day in Bremen, IEC Infobustour in Kassel, and the GOzealand Day in Hamburg.

Education New Zealand placed a link to www.newzealandeducated.com on the home page of the German section for a two month period. A short article on New Zealand as a study destination was also placed in the Newsletter section with a link to the Germany mini site. Studieren.de gives information on German universities, courses, and partner universities outside Germany. The website receives more than 150,000 visits per month, and attracts German and English speaking youth aged 15 to 34. The publisher also sends out monthly newsletters to almost 7,000 interested students and adults.

Two agent seminars were organised in Berlin and Hamburg to brief German education agents on the New Zealand education system and to highlight New Zealand’s high quality education services. 17 and 13  agents from across the English language, high school, tertiary and working holidays sectors attended in Berlin and Hamburg respectively.

Visitors: 9,500. Most interest was shown in Bachelor, Master and Ph.D. programmes and Academic staff and higher education experts also visited the fair to look for potential international partners

Inbound_07Agent Inbound Tour, May 2007 (PACE 2007)
4 German education agents were invited by ENZ on a 10-day familiarisation visit to New Zealand. 14 NZ education providers and regional education clusters were involved. The education agents were able to get to know the participating institutions and their programmes in details for potential future collaboration.

 

 

ItchyFeet07Advertorial
A  two page advertorial was written and placed a in German study and work abroad magazine “Itchy Feet” in April 2007. Itchy Feet is published biannually and has a print run of 55,000. These magazines are distributed for free to key individuals at educational institutions, job centres, government agencies, and educational associations.
5,000 are sold through retail channels.

Visitors: 15,193. The greatest interest was shown for opportunities in the secondary and tertiary sector as well as language programmes including internships.

 

 

 

Agent Inbound Tour, April 2006 (PACE 2006)
Three German education agents were selected to travel to New Zealand for a 10-day familiarisation visit. The purpose of the visit was to provide institutions interested in the German market with an opportunity to meet and establish agent contacts.  It also gives institutions the chance to educate agents about their particular institution and what it has to offer. The education agents were also able to learn about New Zealand’s culture and environment. A total of 21 New Zealand Institutions were involved and appointments and hosted lunches/dinners were organised for institutions and agents.

 

Education New Zealand also participated in the following events: IEC Infobustour, Osnabrueck in May 2009, Step-In NZ day, Stuttgart in March 2009, BIZ Oldesloe in December 2008, MFAT Education Function, Berlin in October 2008 and the Kilroy Roadshow, Scandinavia in September 2008.

 

Articles about Study opportunities in New Zealand were also published in the Kilroy Magazine Denmark in September 2008.
