Expressions of Interest (EOI) - Round 7 Export Education Innovation Programme (EEIP) 2008/2009

Are you paying the $900/pupil State School International Student Levy?

Did you know that of this $900 per international student, only $30 comes to Education New Zealand for industry reinvestment back into the industry via the Education Export Industry Development Fund?  ENZ’s share of the funding is deployed as follows:
    Promotions and Generic Marketing $17.90
    Professional Development $4.46
    Core Operating $4.05
    Industry Research $3.82
    Quality Assurance $0.40

Education New Zealand has been lobbying hard to reduce the State School Levy by $870 – this would bring the Levy paid by schools down to about $30 which is the 0.45% Education Export Levy component (and thus State schools would start paying the same level of Levy as all other education exporters, and it would be reinvested into industry good activities).

As a result of ENZ’s efforts, Hon Dr Cullen, the former Minister for International Education, recently ordered a formal review into the $900 State school Levy.  Education New Zealand welcomes this decision, and we are working in partnership with the Ministry of Education on this review.

ENZ recently facilitated an initial meeting with the Ministry to discuss the Terms of Reference for the review, and we are pleased to report that the general direction of the review is looking positive.  The review will consider the delivery, financial analysis and impact of the $900 State school levy.

As Education New Zealand will be involved at every stage of the review, we will continue to keep you abreast of developments throughout this critical review process.

Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students Review

The Ministry of Education will shortly be seeking Code signatories' views on proposed changes to the Code of Practice.  This review has the potential to impact upon the international student operations of all providers.  Naturally, Education New Zealand will be advocating on behalf of the industry at a national level, however we are strongly encouraging all institutions to register to receive the Code review discussion document and feedback form.  If you wish to register, please email code.feedback@minedu.govt.nz

Short Courses for International Education Administrators - First Module Workshops Completed!

The workshops for the first module offered in this series, Pastoral Care in International Education, have been completed, and were really well received by those who attended.  For those of you still wondering whether to enrol in this next module - Services for international education, here’s some feedback received from the previous workshop participants:

“I thought the content of the assignments was very relative to my job as Director of international students. It reinforced some points, I learnt new points, it challenged me on my “culture” and how I deal with others”

“Lots of variation in information and source of information. Readings, Multimedia and good coverage of cultures. i.e. Latino, Asian, European.  Also loved that the course is interactive -very good workshop!!”

“Understanding other cultural things is connected with my work directly. All information is quite useful and I will share it with other colleagues.”

“I go to a few courses every year of doubtful worth but this was on the money-well done Karen and Education NZ”

We are delighted with the feedback, and give our thanks to Karen from Unitec as well as to all of the course attendees for contributing to this success.

Short Courses for International Education Administrators

*PLEASE NOTE that enrolments will be accepted up to 12th November 2007 *

These four assessed short courses meet the requirements for the National Certificate in Business Administration, Level 4 (60 credits).  The purpose of this qualification is to meet individual skill needs that reflect the diverse roles and positions required to meet business administration and information technology needs of the business community at an advanced level.  Minimum credits specified for interpersonal communications and writing recognise the need for competencies that underpin all business administration roles.

There are four assessed short courses: (note: you do not need to enrol in all 4 courses).  The first course Pastoral care in international education is underway and no more enrolments will be taken.

  • Services for international education (accepting enrolments now)
  • Meeting change and challenges in international education
  • Marketing international education

Each course involves:

  • 2 days 8.30-5.30 of face-to-face teaching in Auckland or Wellington
  • 12 weeks of self-directed study, made up of readings, reflection, learning activities, assessments and
  • discussions
  • Self-directed study materials posted to students at the start of each course.
  • Each week will involve up to 11 hours of study, however as students are fully engaged in working in the sector, there will be a good deal of overlap between the focus of study and their day-to-day work

The first two-day block course (Auckland or Wellington) will be scheduled over the first weeks of the course. If students are out of the country during block teaching there will be an equivalent CD-Rom available as an alternative, with support available if needed.

Where there are places available, applications will be accepted up until the class begins. However, as places are often limited, we recommend that you apply early.
