The CIEET China Fair Series 2008 is also an early event for next year.  CIEET is a series of commercial fairs approved by the Chinese Government, the fairs offer New Zealand an opportunity to showcase and promote our country, education system, and institutions.  The fair cities are Beijing, Xian, Shanghai, Changsha and Guangzhou.
We would like to receive participants’ registrations by Monday 10th December in order to make decisions around the level of promotion in each of the cities, and look at possible Agent Seminar leveraging events.  The first of the Chinese deadlines falls early in January so early planning from New Zealand is vital for this event.

This will be the third year for the April series, holding three one day fairs in Mumbai - 13 April, Cochin - 16 April and New Delhi - 20 April.  The numbers of Indian students coming to New Zealand continues to rise, and better quality and more knowledgeable visitors seem to be the trend at fairs. To ensure all your institutional details are included in the promotional material and we can best utilise our advertising campaign, registrations should be completed before Friday 14th December 2007.  To familiarise yourself with the Indian Market, conditions and requirements before registering please view the India Market Profiles HERE. Student Website: Get your institution online

Get your institution profiled on www.newzealandeducated.com and be part of the largest, most informative education portal for students looking for information about New Zealand.  Advertising and fairs worldwide use the website as the call to action and education agents refer students to the site for more information about study and living in New Zealand.

The New Zealand Educated website is viewed up to 251,000 times every week and the intensive international Web 2.0 campaign that begins in early 2008 will drive lots more visitors to and through the site.

From the recent ISB research it is clear just how important websites are to today’s international students.  Websites, agents, and friends and family rank as the most important aids for students when they are deciding where to study.

A New Zealand Educated profile page should form part of your 2008 marketing strategy. Contact Vince Warnock at ENZ now to learn about how you can get profiled on the site. Vince can talk you through setting up your profile and how to optimise your page to get students there.

Short Courses for International Education Administrators

These four assessed short courses meet the requirements for the National Certificate in Business Administration, Level 4 (60 credits).  The purpose of this qualification is to meet individual skill needs that reflect the diverse roles and positions required to meet business administration and information technology needs of the business community at an advanced level.  Minimum credits specified for interpersonal communications and writing recognise the need for competencies that underpin all business administration roles.
There are four assessed short courses: (note: you do not need to enrol in all 4 courses). The first course Pastoral care in international education is underway and no more enrolments will be taken.
  • Services for international education (accepting enrolments now for February 2008)
  • Meeting change and challenges in international education
  • Marketing international education

Each course involves:

  • 2 days 8.30-5.30 of face-to-face teaching in Auckland or Wellington
  • 12 weeks of self-directed study, made up of readings, reflection, learning activities, assessments and discussions
  • Self-directed study materials posted to students at the start of each course.
  • Each week will involve up to 11 hours of study, however as students are fully engaged in working in the sector, there will be a good deal of overlap between the focus of study and their day-to-day work

The first two-day block course (Auckland or Wellington) will be scheduled over the first weeks of the course. If students are out of the country during block teaching there will be an equivalent CD-Rom available as an alternative, with support available if needed.
Where there are places available, applications will be accepted up until the class begins. However, as places are often limited, we recommend that you apply early.

Immigration Policy Changes:  Amendments to the Skilled Migrant Category

The Department of Labour has recently made some changes to the Skilled Migrant Category.  These amendments were originally promulgated in DoL’s Amendment Circular 2007-19. On 23 November 2007 those amendments were revoked.  The amendments contained in DoL’s Amendment Circular 2007-21 will come into effect on 4 February 2008. This amended policy reflects the policy previously certified to take effect on 26 November 2007, with some modifications.

We believe institutions will be interested in the following changes:
SM14.10.1 New Zealand qualifications
Despite SM14.10, SM14.10.5, and SM14.10.10, New Zealand qualifications at level three or four of the Register are recognised and qualify for 50 points if:

A. the qualification would have been recognised for the award of points under Skilled Migrant Category policy that was in effect on 3 February 2008; and

B. the principal applicant gained the qualification before 4 February 2008; or

C. the principal applicant was enrolled in a course of study, resulting in the qualification for which they are claiming points, on 3 February 2008.

PISA Results

The OECD have just released preliminary PISA survey results for 2006, with positive rankings for New Zealand against our major competitors. The complete report is due for full release tomorrow. Catch the next E-news where we will include an analysis of how New Zealand fared.

Japan Promotion

Tourism NZ launched a $1.8 million promotional campaign in Japan recently which included a New Zealand Festival in Roppongi Hills, Tokyo from 16 - 18 November. Education New Zealand leveraged off this activity, with a branded booth which generically promoted New Zealand Education and the www.newzealandeducated.com website.
