1. New Zealand’s 17th Annual International Education Conference 2008 is all go!

At Auckland’s Langham Hotel from Wednesday 6th to Friday 8th August, this year’s Conference features a full 3 day programme with plenty of interest for all sectors. Make this your professional development and networking priority this year!

The ‘Connect the Dots’ theme recognises that our industry comprises many different sectors, markets, students and priorities.

Highlights for 2008 include:

  • Robert Bestani, Director General of Private Sector Finance at the Asian Development Bank will give “An update on education policy developments throughout Asia; the work of the Private Sector Operations Department of the Asia Development Bank, and; advice on the opportunities for New Zealand’s institutions from the ADB’s investments throughout Asia”

  • Release of new market research on the education export opportunities in Thailand, from Suzanne Snively and Scott Creswell, senior education and marketing specialists at PriceWaterhouseCoopers;

  • Presentation of new research on how New Zealand’s immigration policy settings stack up against our major competitors (Australia, Canada, USA and the UK). Nick Davis, from Martin Jenkins and Associates, a well respected private policy consultancy will present his benchmarking research findings.

  • Release of research into the economic impact of international students. Dr Adolf Stroombergen, Director of Infometrics will present his findings on the economic value that the industry contributes to the New Zealand economy.

  • Michael Barnett, Chief Executive of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce and Deputy Chair of the Auckland Regional Council, will give an informed view on the general business environment and what can be done to assist business and exporters to flourish

  • Tim Rogers, Director of UK based International Education Consultants and trainer for the European Association for International Education (EAIE) was involved in a highly successful professional development workshop that ENZ organised earlier in the year. Due to popular demand, Tim will be back and leading a session on Maximising Potential;

  • Simon Bush from i-Grad and Tim Rogers will present their latest international student barometer studies. I-grad’s earlier work provided fascinating insights into how we compare relative to other countries. The next two studies will prove to be equally as interesting.

  • Markus Badde, Chief Executive Officer of ICEF will present his views on Global Trends in International Student Recruitment.

  • With the 2008 General Election expected to be held shortly after conference, both major political parties will unveil their International Education policies at the conference. Hon Pete Hodgson MP and Pansy Wong MP will give us a collective heads up on what the industry can expect post election.

  • Further sessions include: Immigration, Issues around ‘high growth markets’ (such as India, Saudi Arabia and Germany) and Students from the Gulf States: inter-cultural and academic experiences.

  • Practical marketing workshops – including maximising Fairs, Agent Workshops and the Web

  • The popular Schools Workshop Wednesday – six sessions, an all day experience by schools for schools

  • The Export Education Innovation Programme – hear from those who received funding, and what they did with it (and what it did for them)
  • Networking, social sessions, good food, refreshments, good company….

2. Proposed AEI-NOOSR Workshop

In May 2007 Education New Zealand commissioned UK NARIC to provide a two day workshop on the evaluation of academic and vocational qualifications, and the identification of fraudulent documentation. This workshop was very successful and has led to requests from the industry for Education New Zealand to consider approaching AEI-NOOSR to deliver a further workshop on their system and processes for assessing overseas qualifications.

Education New Zealand are currently liaising with the AEI-NOOSR team in regard to the feasibility of offering a workshop in New Zealand, tentatively scheduled for the 21st and 22nd of August 2008, in Auckland.

If you would be interested in attending a workshop of this nature, please register your interest HERE

We will then contact you with further information once details are finalised. An outline of what the workshop would potentially cover is as follows:

Day one:

Target audience: Aimed at individuals with little or no experience in assessing overseas qualifications or as a refresher course. This hands-on workshop is aimed at increasing your confidence in making assessment decisions about overseas qualifications and using the assessment guidelines contained in the Country Education Profiles Online.

Course objectives:

  • Learn how to effectively use the Country Education Profiles Online as a recognition tool including what our assessment guidelines mean
  • Develop practical skills to understand qualification documents
  • Develop greater understanding of country education systems (countries to be confirmed) and how qualifications are assessed
  • Understand AEI-NOOSR’s role and assessment methodology
  • Recognise common assessment issues and AEI-NOOSR strategies
  • Identify essential resources and contacts

Day two (day one is a pre-requisite):

Target audience: Aimed at individuals with more than 1-2 years experience in assessing overseas qualifications or managers who are interested in developing improved policies and practices on recognition. Content will focus on guidance on how to assess outside the Country Education Profile Online assessment guidelines.

Course objectives:

  • Learn how to effectively use the Country Education Profiles Online and our assessment guidelines
  • Develop practical skills on how to assess qualifications not covered by the Country Education Profiles Online
  • Develop knowledge on overseas education systems and complex assessments (countries to be confirmed)
  • Increase understanding and networks of other organisations and how they assess qualifications

3. Reminder that the Education New Zealand Trustee nominations close on the 13th June

Each year the Education New Zealand Trust holds an election for appointing its Trustees (ENZ’s Board of Directors). All educational institutions that are paying the Export Education Levy are entitled to nominate persons to stand for election to become a Board member of the Education New Zealand Trust. Please note that nominations do not necessarily need to be persons currently engaged in the industry – they could be persons from outside the industry with skill sets that would be of benefit to the Education New Zealand Trust.

Nominations are now open. If you wish to nominate someone (or even nominate yourself!), please click here to find out more.
