Amendments to Student Visa/Immigration Policy - Consultation.
The Minister of Immigration, Hon David Cunliffe, and the Department of Labour are wishing to consult education exporters on a discussion paper that scopes a number of potential changes to immigration policy and practice.
The Department has asked Education New Zealand to distribute a discussion paper to education exporters in order to solicit comment and feedback from the sector. ENZ will then synthesise comments from throughout the industry into a summary pan-industry submission for the Department of Labour and Minister.

The discussion paper covers the following six potential changes:
1. Extending the duration of graduate work permits;
2. Adjusting criteria for the granting of special work permits;
3. Clarifying criteria for granting six month open work permits;
4. Clarifying student permit status for students finishing their course of study;
5. Increasing flexibility on who can act as guardians for young international students; and
6. Addressing difficulties in attracting international students for national trade certificate courses.
We would strongly encourage all providers to read the discussion paper, as it flags a number of important policy changes that will impact upon your work.
Our brief initial assessment of the mooted changes are that they are largely positive, and in the main will be received positively by education exporters. However, we are seeking your thoughts and comments to include in the industry’s submission to the Department of Labour.
Please direct your written feedback by Wednesday 13 December 2006 to ENZ’s Chief Executive, Robert Stevens, at: robert.stevens@educationnz.org.nz |
