PACE Plus

PACE is the cornerstone of the generic marketing programme. However, we know that institutions often have good ideas which fall outside the PACE programme.
PACE Plus is the way to get those initiatives up and running! In summary, PACE Plus is for clusters of institutions that want to undertake a new initiative maybe in a new market. The full criteria and explanation of PACE Plus is at www.educationnz.org.nz/marketing_planforsuccess.html

Depth Strategy Update

China, India, South Korea and Viet Nam have been selected as the ‘depth markets’ for 2006/07. In addition, their will be specific generic promotion in North America, Germany, Brazil, Thailand and Malaysia.  In terms of actual specifics of generic promotions, ENZ is working with its Commercial Development Strategy Groups to assist with the development of in-country commercial strategies. Draft plans for each market will be rolled out in November and final decisions made in December.  We will keep you in the loop on developments via future editions of e-news.

Conference 2007

Diary Conference now - August 8th - 10th 2007 at the Hotel Grand Chancellor, Christchurch. (We would have liked Queenstown, but the greater ease and lower cost of travel to Christchurch won the day!)

Planning is already underway, and we are always keen for your ideas as to workshops and speakers. Format will be similar to this year, but in line with suggestions made we will allow a little more time for workshops, and try and eliminate timing conflicts between main floor and breakout sessions.

For those who can do without the musical aftermath on the Thursday evening, there will be a 'cocktail lounge' set aside for quieter networking post dinner!

Global Scan

From the wide world of international education....

  • Business week magazine speculates on how foreign universities may go about setting up in India. It's not as easy as it sounds...http://www.businessweek.com/globalbiz/content/oct2006/gb20061009_517543.htm?chan=search

  • Meanwhile, the UK juggernaut rolls on. Over the last decade, the number of non EU international students enrolled in UK universities has doubled from about 111,000 to 218,395, according to Universities UK. That’s a lot of students (although it should be noted that the enrolments in New Zealand universities went up by 500% over the same timeframe). What is equally interesting is that UK students are now facing domestic fees of around 3,000 pounds a year, and this is causing more of them to consider alternatives.

  • Meanwhile, the news from the US is not so good (from a US perspective that is). The Financial Times suggests that the US is in danger of losing its status as the first choice destination of international students. The report, by the American Council on Education, an industry research group, said that while the country was still the most popular destination, other countries - namely Japan, France and Germany - were outpacing US growth in that market. Margaret Spellings, US education secretary, said she was "very concerned" about the report's findings.

  • The latest Times Higher Education Supplement Global Top 200 Universities 2006/07: Auckland University has moved up to 46th (up from 52) whilst University of Otago has shot up dramatically from 186 to 79.
