Major Announcement - ENZ and NZTE sign Global Partnership Agreement

Earlier today a five year global partnership agreement was signed by ENZ Chief Executive Robert Stevens and NZTE Chief Executive Tim Gibson, which will help grow New Zealand’s $1.9 billion education export industry.  Both Chief Executives welcomed the partnership, which holds significant opportunity for every New Zealand educational institution that is involved in recruiting international students.

Under the terms of the agreement, ENZ will be the lead central agency with responsibility for student centric activities and the promotion of New Zealand as a destination for international students.  This shift in management will allow NZTE to concentrate on investigating education and training opportunities for New Zealand in the international corporate, industry and government markets.

From 1 January 2007, Education New Zealand will take on the day-to-day operational tasking of eight NZTE FTEs in 16 locations around the globe.  This staff resource will help ENZ deliver a range of coordinated, strategic marketing activities that are focussed around international student recruitment.  These activities will include:

Consumer focussed activities:

  • student counselling; and
  • public seminars.

Trade/agent focused activities:

  • profile raising/relationship building; and
  • assistance with generic queries/collateral requests.

In-country implementation of the national generic and collective marketing programme (PACE):

  • generic advertising campaigns in ‘depth’ markets, view media release HERE
  • NZ education fairs; and
  • in country agent seminars and identification of key agents for in-bound familiarisation visits.

Demand driven marketing activities under the recently announced PACE Plus initiative. View the details of PACE Plus HERE.

The global partnership agreement between ENZ and NZTE is similar to the partnerships that NZTE has with other national export organisations such as Biotech New Zealand and Meat & Wool New Zealand.

ENZ are currently holding a series of workshops with offshore NZTE offices to ensure everyone is well briefed on the implications and work plan for this new partnership. The first workshop was recently held in Milan, with the European NZTE offices involved, and two more workshops are scheduled in Bangkok and Los Angeles in December, which will include New Zealand Trade and Enterprise offices from all Asian, and North and South American markets involved.

The list of locations that are involved in the new partnership are:

  • Hamburg
  • Beijing
  • Guangzhou
  • Shanghai
  • Hong Kong
  • Seoul
  • Taipei
  • Toyko
  • Bangkok
  • Delhi
  • Ho Chi Minh City
  • Jakarta
  • Kuala Lumpur
  • Washington D.C.
  • Santiago
  • Sao Paulo

Education New Zealand and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise are extremely excited about the new strategy, which will allow each organisation to focus on a specific area of work.  The new global strategy will ensure New Zealand remains top of mind for individuals and organisations looking for high-quality education and training.

The agreement builds on the extremely successful relationship forged between the two organisations under the 2001 Five Steps Forward initiative.

Five Steps Forward has been a significant driver contributing to the education industry becoming a significant export earner, and today’s agreement will help us to maintain and grow the contribution we make to the overall economy,” said Robert Stevens at the signing.

A joint media release has been sent out by Education New Zealand and NZTE.  View it HERE.
