PACE 2008: Registration are open!

India Education Fairs, 13 – 20 April
The first of the India Fair series is scheduled to begin in April, with the second series following in September. This will be the third year for the April series, holding three one day fairs in Mumbai - 13 April, Cochin - 16 April and New Delhi - 20 April. The numbers of Indian students coming to New Zealand continues to rise, and better quality and more knowledgeable visitors seem to be the trend at fairs. In April 2007 visitor numbers recorded were: Mumbai – 435, Cochin – 400 and New Delhi – 600. A great deal of pre fair organisation is involved in these fairs and early registrations are essential. To ensure all your institutional details are included in the promotional material and we can best utilise our advertising campaign, registrations should be completed before 15 December 2007. To familiarise yourself with the Indian Market, conditions and requirements before registering please view the India Market Profiles HERE

A website for India has also been created to further assist and keep those involved in this market up to date with all Indian focused activities and meetings. This can be viewed HERE and will require the industry username and password.

We would like to receive registrations by Wednesday 5th December in order to make decisions around the level of promotion in each of the cities and look at possible Agent Seminar leveraging events.  The first of the Chinese deadlines falls early in January so early planning from New Zealand is vital for this event.

New Zealand Education Fairs, Chile, 7 & 9 April

New to the PACE calendar in 2008, the fairs are a collaboration with a local agent. Visitors to the Antofagasta fair are likely to be from Antofagasta, Calama and other local mining areas with wealthy mining families. The Valdivia fair will attract visitors from Valdivia, Temuco, Concepción, Osorno, Cohaique and Puerto Varas where New Zealand has a strong presence in forestry, dairy and agriculture. In 2007, these fairs were held in August and included a generic Education New Zealand stand and a small number of New Zealand participants. The move to April for 2008 has been made to coincide with ExpoIngles Chile. These Colombian events will be on a smaller scale than ExpoIngles Chile, but similarly will promote other countries as well as New Zealand.  Participants are likely to have a table area each rather than a full booth set up. All sectors are welcome to attend. The deadline to register is Wednesday 5th December. For more information about this fair, see the fair website HERE or the PACE listing HERE or contact Genevieve

Taiwan Agent & Student Workshops, 19 - 22 April
A series of agent seminars and mini-fairs focussed only on New Zealand will take place in Taipei, Kaohsiung and Taichung (Taiwan’s three main cities) from 19 to 22 April 2008. These workshops seek to provide opportunities for interaction with both agents and students. The agent and student workshops offer excellent opportunities to New Zealand education providers across all sub-sectors to develop and enhance relationships with agents and interface directly with students through a well organised programme. ENZ Roadshow Recap

Rob Stevens, Sarah Cornish, Kathy Phillips and Stuart Boag have just completed a ten day ‘road show’, meeting with institutions to hear their views on priorities and issues. During the time, they have met with around 180 institutions and stakeholders in 25 different venues from Whangarei to Invercargill.

They received some excellent feedback and ideas relating to Advocacy (especially around immigration, quals recognition and fees including the schools levy) Research and PD priorities, suggestions for next year's Conference and other workshops and marketing and comms initiatives. Over the next few months you will see some of these ideas translated to action.

Early priorities arising from the roadshow will include:

  • Ongoing Agents training and the development of a ‘certification’ model concentrating on depth markets at first
  • ‘Turn Key’ presentations for local communities and interest groups to help give the ‘big picture’ about international education
  • More collateral and additional Brand value examples
  • Further market research (Thailand and USA projects are already underway)
  • Keeping on with the advocacy work as noted above

Other suggestions will be taken on board during the development of the 08/09 work programmes and Conference.

Short Courses for International Education Administrators

These four assessed short courses meet the requirements for the National Certificate in Business Administration, Level 4 (60 credits).  The purpose of this qualification is to meet individual skill needs that reflect the diverse roles and positions required to meet business administration and information technology needs of the business community at an advanced level.  Minimum credits specified for interpersonal communications and writing recognise the need for competencies that underpin all business administration roles.

There are four assessed short courses (note: you do not need to enrol in all 4 courses):

  • The first course Pastoral care in international education is underway and no more enrolments will be taken.
  • Services for international education (accepting enrolments now for February 2008)
  • Meeting change and challenges in international education
  • Marketing international education

Each course involves:

  • 2 days 8.30-5.30 of face-to-face teaching in Auckland or Wellington
  • 12 weeks of self-directed study, made up of readings, reflection, learning activities, assessments and discussions
  • Self-directed study materials posted to students at the start of each course.
  • Each week will involve up to 11 hours of study, however as students are fully engaged in working in the sector, there will be a good deal of overlap between the focus of study and their day-to-day work

The first two-day block course (Auckland or Wellington) will be scheduled over the first weeks of the course. If students are out of the country during block teaching there will be an equivalent CD-Rom available as an alternative, with support available if needed.

Where there are places available, applications will be accepted up until the class begins. However, as places are often limited, we recommend that you apply early.

Training Opportunity for New Zealand Hospitality Students in India

The Trident Hilton Gurgaon has contacted the Ministry of Education’s New Delhi-based Education Counsellor to offer an exciting training opportunity for New Zealand hospitality students.

The Trident Hilton Gurgaon a five star member of the Oberoi Group in India, has a marketing alliance with Hilton International and is located in a new city on the outskirts of New Delhi. The hotel is one of New Delhi’s upper tier with guests paying an average of USD400 per night in the high season. Training at this hotel would offer a unique opportunity to interact with an international business clientele in a large busy Asian city.

The programme provides six months on-the-job training in Front Office and Food and Beverage service.  The training can start at any time of the year, and the students will go through a two week induction programme to understand all the functions of the hotel. Following this, they will be attached to a Manager in the Front Office and then the Food and Beverage Department. The general scope of the work will include:

Guest interaction including:
* Greeting and welcoming guests
* Situation handling
* Report generation and analysis
* Market surveys
* Presentations on various aspects of the work including the operations and functions of the various departments

At the end of the training, the hotel will award a certification of training completion to the students. The hotel will provide a letter of offer for training to support the student’s visa applications. A stipend of about NZD300 per month will be paid (sufficient to cover costs in India). The hotel will provide uniforms, accommodation close by, a pick up and drop off facility and free meals while at work.
