Conference Update

With only one month to go until the National Industry Conference, the programme is coming together fast with an excellent line-up of speakers and workshops highlighting aspects of this year’s theme… ‘Under the Microscope: Myths and Realities in International Education’

The first Reality is that we have the strongest line-up of speakers ever at Conference. Currently confirmed (we are awaiting final confirmation from at least three other international speakers) are:

Professor Barry McGaw AO, currently attached to the University of Melbourne and formerly the Director of Education at the OECD. Professor McGaw gave a hard hitting presentation on international education at the recent AEI Conference in Brisbane and is an incisive commentator on the realities of globalizing education.

In recent years the British have been making a strong showing in international education, with successive Prime Ministerial Initiatives.  Joining us from London will be Pat Killingley, Director of Educational Services at the British Council. Pat will discuss the underpinning rationale for the PM’s latest Initiative as well as the implications from both a British and New Zealand perspective.

Allison Doorbar is the Managing Partner of the prestigious international education consultancy and research agency JWT Education. Alison will be presenting research titled ‘Review of the Asian Student of 2005’. This research will provide a timely update of the Asian student market, highlighting the changes which have occurred in this region recently, the potential impact of these changes and how international educators can most effectively address them.

Further specific market research will be presented by Alan Olsen; Director, SPRE Ltd, and Rob Laurence, Director, Prospect Group who will release their research on the Korean and Japanese markets.

Futurist and international education consultant Daniel Guhr, from the leading US based consultancy the Illuminate Group. Dan will look into the future in his presentation entitled ‘International Education 10 Years Out – Why the Well Prepared will Win’.

Professor Nigel Healey, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the College of Business and Economics, University of Canterbury. He asks "Is Higher Education Really Globalising”? And postulates that while trends in higher education around the world appear to support this orthodox view, there is an alternative interpretation of developments, which leads to a different vision for the global higher education ‘industry’ of 2020.

‘Diversity and Internationalisation – The Challenges facing New Zealand’ is the topic of Professor Dr Chris Tremewan; Pro Vice Chancellor International, University of Auckland.

Rod Oram; the popular and thought provoking Economic and Business Commentator for the Sunday Star Times will speak on the topic: ‘An Outsiders Guide to International Education Happiness’.

Conference is the essential event for catching up on the latest from Minister of Education with responsibility for international education, Hon. Dr. Michael Cullen, and the new CEO of NZQA, Dr Karen Poutasi.  Other key stakeholder representatives from the Ministry of Education and NZTE will bring delegates up to date with the overall environment that affects all institutions.

Other Presenters range from leading school international marketers like Suzette Eastmond (Rangitoto) and Kim Harase (ACG) to local researchers and practical consultants such as Russ Skinner (Skinner Strategic) and George Koria from the Asia Crime Unit of the NZ Police. And the Sector Workshop Wednesday returns with NZTE led Business Development workshops, Jim Sinclair and the Code Office and NZIS, among others.

And there are some unique opportunities in the Agent’s Forums.  Agents specializing in the Baltic States, Eastern Europe, Turkey, Spain and Latin America will be on hand with market intelligence, insights and a wealth of practical information relating to their markets. Get the inside info from the inside experts!

Don’t be taken by the Myth that Conference is all hard work! There is plenty of networking time and entertainment as well! On Wednesday evening, after the afternoon Workshops we will be hosting a Cocktail Networking Hour with the highly recommended Auckland based salsa band, Zingaro.

On Thursday night, TNT Express will be hosting the annual Conference dinner, which is sure to be a great night.   In addition to dinner, entertainment will be provided by Sugar, a high energy dance act guaranteed to get your toes tapping.  The dinner is a great time to socialize with your peers and chat about all things education (or not)!
