PACE 2008

The upcoming PACE programme is now available online HERE. Over the next couple of weeks, we will be sending out the popular and useful PACE wall planner, with key activities and dates included.

Engagment with PACE is very much online these days. We will not be sending out the big 'PACE Book' - feedback suggests that it is cumbersome and goes out of date too quickly. Market Reports and updated information about activities are in the Market Information and Marketing Mix Builder sections of the Website, and we will continue to use e-news to remind you of upcoming events and advise of any amendments to the programme.

There is a large range of Fairs and other events already planned, and as in past years we will respond to opportunities that arrive during the year. Use the website for ongoing updates and programme developments. Activity registrations are taken HERE

Inbound Agent Visits - Changes for 2008

Inbound agents visits have been part of the PACE programme for a number of years. Since 2003 we have hosted over 300 agents from many different countries, and over 1000 individual institutional visits along with regional and cluster activities have taken place.

However, many institutions have mixed feelings about the model that ENZ deploys for these visits, and this has been reflected at our annual industry conference and in other industry forums. Recently, ENZ undertook a qualitative external evaluation of our marketing activity, and concerns relating to the agent visit model were raised during this process.

In response to this, the user pays Inbound Agent Visits are discontinued for PACE 2008. ENZ will instead host a much reduced number of Agent Visits, which will take place as part of generic campaigns undertaken for strategic reasons and follow the model established by the likes of the TIECA and KOSA Agent Association visits.

As another alternative to PACE inbound agent visits, ENZ has been a key instigator and supporter of the forthcoming ANZA Agent Workshop in Sydney in May 2008. We believe this will provide opportunities to meet new agents, and we will be looking to get further leverage perhaps via 'add-on' associated short familiarisation visits. The workshop is scheduled for Auckland in 2009, and securing a major international workshop in our region is an exciting development.  Many institutions have registered already - more information is available HERE.  In addition, there are also many excellent agent workshops - Alphe and ICEF host a number of international events around the world.

This new approach means that institutions and clusters may look to undertake or cooperate on their own tailored inbound visits. Accessing ENZ and NZTE assistance is possible via the 'PACE Plus' model.  ENZ continues to recognise the significant role that agents play in our industry and as part of our Depth Market and generic promotion strategy are continuing to work on projects related to agent promotions, training and communications.

Scholarships Awarded

On 27 September 2007 thirty eight New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships (NZIDRS) were awarded to PhD students from 21 different countries.  The NZIDRS funds up to three years of study for international PhD students. The scholarship is administered by Education New Zealand for the Ministry of Education.  To read more about the scholarship recipients, please click HERE or visit the Scholarship website HERE

Stats Update

Over the last week, we have updated Student Visa stats relating to a 'basket' of about 70 key markets. This gives information on the number of first time students over the last 9 years to the end of the 06/07 year, (which is June 30th), the number of onshore and offshore approvals for fee paying students to the end of the 06/07 year and the sector breakdown which is a 'snapshot' taken at the 30th March each year (but for which we cannot isolate exactly fee paying students).

The trends and numbers are very interesting. For example, the approvals data notes that currently 86% of all approvals relate to Asian students, but overall 80% of the total current international student body is from Asia and 68% of the new starts are from Asia (down from 90% in 01/02). As with all stats, it is important to look carefully at the description of what is actually being counted!

The key weakness of Student Visa stats is that they tell us very little about short term students. More information on this is contained in the Key Indicators for the Export Education Levy and the Statistic New Zealand Annual Census of English language Schools. The most recent reports from both these sources are also on the website. Check them out at HERE

Upcoming - the ENZ Roadshow

For two weeks in November Rob, Stuart, Kathy and Sarah will be 'on the road' updating institutions on what ENZ are doing and inviting discussion and input into all areas of ENZ’s work supporting institutions that are involved in international education. The group will be visiting Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Manawatu, Taranaki, Wellington, Marlborough, Canterbury, Otago and Southland.

Those institutions that have responded will be contacted shortly. We look forward to traversing a range of policy advocacy, industry development, scholarship, innovation and marketing issues with institutions.  Your views will form a critical input into our planning for 2008.
