Fancy becoming a Trustee of the Education New Zealand Trust?
Each year the Education New Zealand Trust holds an election for appointing its Trustees (ENZ’s Board of Directors). All educational institutions that are paying the Export Education Levy are entitled to nominate persons to stand for election to become a Board member of the Education New Zealand Trust. Please note that nominations do not necessarily need to be persons currently engaged in the industry – they could be persons from outside the industry with skill sets that would be of benefit to the Education New Zealand Trust.
Nominations are now open. If you wish to nominate someone (or even nominate yourself!), please click HERE to find out more.

The International Education Agenda – Discussion Document
The Government have released their Discussion Document on ‘The International Education Agenda’ 2007 – 2012 and have called for industry feedback.
There are few big surprises in the document – it builds on existing policies and strategies, and references the industry's strategy as well. ENZ will be making a submission, but we urge everyone to read the document carefully and submit as requested.
It is tempting to think that strategy documents are only of interest to policy wonks and other bureaucratic types! In reality, both the industry and the Government's strategy are essential to give clarity, guidance and direction to all stakeholders. They let you know what the priorities are, and what the future policy direction is. They might not be as riveting as J K Rowling, (and there are no magic formulas) but they are well worth the read!
Responses are due 25th May

Research into the Experiences of Chinese Students in New Zealand
Over a year ago, Education New Zealand commissioned Elsie Ho and the Migration Research Group at Waikato University to do a new report into the experiences of Chinese students in New Zealand.
The report has just been completed and released, and gives much useful information on Chinese students' attitudes and experiences. Of particular interest is the change in attitudes between students who came to New Zealand some years ago, and more recent enrolments.

Just the Stats: China
With the China research just having been released and attendant publicity, an update on the current stats is timely.
It looks like the incoming numbers have at long last lifted slightly. However (notwithstanding reports of ‘surges in demand’) we expect the overall number in New Zealand to decline further before we reach equilibrium in students inflows and outflows as study is completed.

- China to crack down on joint educational programs
The Chinese government has decided to scrutinise education programs jointly run by Chinese and foreign colleges, to ensure that local students get value for money. With demand for post-secondary education far exceeding supply, some overseas institutions have set up campuses in China while others collaborate with local institutes. With an increase in the number of education providers operating in the country, the quality of programs on offer is being compromised.
According to a report on the Ministry of Education's website, a recent investigation has revealed a series of irregular operations by joint educational institutions. The ministry will not approve new Sino-foreign joint programs on higher occupational education until 2009. Applications for new joint programs on postgraduate education will also be carefully scrutinised.
