Conference

Have you registered yet?
There is still room for last minute registrations! http://www.educationnz.org.nz/indust_annindustconfform.html

Highlights are too numerous to list, but there is something for everyone in what is the biggest programme yet. Given the amount of development and change underway in the industry at the moment, Conference is the ideal opportunity to catch up with the latest policy and practice from both here and offshore, network with your peers and discuss the issues.

The SkyCity Convention Centre is a new, very spacious purpose built convention centre and will be a very 'delegate friendly' venue. We have some excellent sponsors on board. Everything is set for an excellent Conference next week!

But if you aren't there, you miss out - Act Now!

If you haven't caught up with the programme, check it out at:

New Statistics

The Statistics New Zealand Survey of English language for 2006 has just been released and is available at:

www2.stats.govt.nz/domino/external/pasfull/pasfull.nsf/web/Paper+Survey+
of+English+Language+Providers+Year+ended+March+2006?open

or the raw data is on our website at: www.educationnz.org.nz/policy_stats.html

One of the more interesting features is that they have done a major revision to the numbers for 2005. Following concerns expressed by ELS people last year, ENZ organised a workshop last November with industry representatives, Statistics New Zealand and other stats gatherers to discuss this and other issues. Statistics New Zealand re-examined their data for 2005, and have made quite a few changes.
We cross reference this data with that from MoE and NZIS, whilst individual sectors compare with their own data sources. As far as we can see, the 2006 figures look consistent with those from other sources.

Statistics New Zealand also did an estimate of the overall value of international education. Their figure was quite at variance with the one that ENZ calculates.

The ENZ calculation is based on methodology was that developed by Infometrics a few years ago, and while not absolutely current it was validated by a very comprehensive student survey done in the Taranaki region a couple of years ago. We are confident that our methodology is robust, and presents a fair estimate of the foreign exchange earnings of international education.

You can see the earnings chart for the past few years at: www.educationnz.org.nz/policy_stats.html

Statistics New Zealand also asked for information about student weeks for the first time this year (another recommendation that came out of the November workshop). You can find a summary of this data at: www.educationnz.org.nz/policy_stats.html
