Upcoming PACE Opportunities
  • Taiwan Virtual Fair
    October - December
The Virtual Fair is internet advertising, which runs on a leading Taiwanese website, equivalent to NZ’s STUFF site.  Basically, a space on the website is created to promote New Zealand education generically and lead to comprehensive information on each participating institution.  NZTE is contributing funding towards this activity.  The first Virtual Fair ran from March to May this year in Taiwan and was deemed a success, with a total of 257,683 clicks to the site over the two month period.   Based on the strength of this result, the second fair will run from October through until December.
    More information is HERE

The deadline for registering is this Wednesday 6th September.

  • Inbound Spanish Agents
    8 - 17 October
Only a few spaces left! Numbers to NZ are currently very modest, but there is real interest coming through from agents. The list of Nominated Agents is already online and their interests cover Secondary especially with sports and outdoor programmes, English Language and university courses.  See more info HERE or contact Karen

  • Hong Kong Inbound Agents
    8 -18 October
One of the last inbound agent visits in the PACE 2006 calendar, the Hong Kong Agents will be in New Zealand mid October.  A list of potential agents has been determined and is available HERE
There are still a couple of spaces left for interested institutions, if you're keen on hosting agents from Hong Kong to promote your institution, please register HERE

NOTE: For Inbound Visits, the Cluster Option allows a few like minded institutions to informally work together for the visit and share the costs. Ask the Marketing Team how this can work for you!

  • China CEAIE Fairs
    14 – 29 October
As always, we've had a great response to this popular fair series, and organisation for the new look NZ pavilion is well under way.  This Fair series is an integral part of the China 'depth' strategy, and is seen as an essential part of our education positioning in China.
This year the fairs will run in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Nanjing, Harbin and Chengdu.  Please note that the dates for the Chengdu and Nanjing fairs have recently been changed slightly by the organisers - more information HERE

  • Australia/New Zealand Joint Fair - Seoul, South Korea
    28 & 29 October
Korea is still the second largest source of students in New Zealand and last year was the largest source of first time student approvals. This popular weekend fair attracted 3,900 visitors last year and is one of New Zealand’s ‘flagship events’ in what is a hotly contested and genuinely multi sector market.
This fair is open to all New Zealand institutions; previously there were restrictions limiting primary and intermediate schools, however this has been lifted and all are invited to participate.  More info HERE or contact Karen

  • New Zealand & Ireland Education Fair, Tokyo, Japan
    2 & 3 November
The November Fair in Tokyo is quickly approaching and we encourage you to consider promoting your institution under the NZ Inc banner in our 3rd strongest market.  This fair will be will be a collaboration between New Zealand and Ireland and is open to all sectors.  The dates are 2 & 3 November, the 3rd being Culture Day - a public holiday for the Japanese.  This fair is being financially supported by NZTE.
More information is available HERE or contact Laurette

  • Global Education Alternatives Fair, Manila, Philippines
    24 & 25 November
An exciting new PACE activity! Demand for New Zealand education from the Philippines continues to be comparatively modest but consistent, with an increase last  year following and easing the year before. With New Zealand offering competitive tuition fees, quality of education and potential migration opportunities we believe that there are ongoing opportunities to improve New Zealand's penetration into this market.

'Under the Microscope: Myths and Realities in International Education' was the theme for the 15th annual ENZ Conference, held a fortnight ago at the new SkyCity Convention Centre in Auckland. One very real reality was that the whole three days were very successful, and we have had many complimentary remarks from delegates.

A total of 403 institutional representatives, stakeholders, sponsors, media types, guests and other assorted interested parties (not counting another 90 schools reps who were involved in Code PD workshops) enjoyed two and a half days of SkyCity hospitality, a range of interesting speakers and sessions (this year there were over 40 seperate session involving 51 different presenters including 9 from outside New Zealand) and plenty of networking and conviviality. Topics ranged widely from policy presentations and comparisons with offshore practice through to hard facts and stats, attitudinal research and practical marketing techniques. We also got some helpful feedback that will help us make next years Conference even better!

The were many excellent presentations and they make a very useful resource - the presentations are up on the website HERE. They are sorted by stream - a programme is also still online if you have forgotten which session was which! From Rob's opening presentation 'Myths and Realities' through to 'International Education 10 Years Out' (Dan Guhr's closing address), they're all there!*

* = well, most of them are - we are still sourcing the last few!

Further Conference news and more information arising from some of the key sessions will be highlighted and further discussed in an 'E-News Conference Special' due soon.

Conference 2007: Where???

For 2007, it's the turn of the South Island.

A couple of years ago we were in Christchurch, and that is certainly accessible (in terms of getting there from elsewhere) and has appropriate sized venues.

Another alternative is Queenstown - there are suitable venues but accessibility is something we are investigating further. We would prefer to hold the cost of return air travel from the main centres to under $300/person.

Dunedin is another possibility; again there are venues that can host a Conference our size.

Draft dates are Wednesday 8th August to Friday 10th August 2007 - this is a week earlier and is designed to reduce the conflict with marketing events.

We would like your feedback as to which location you would prefer:

Literature Review Update: International Students - Interpersonal, Institutional and Community Impacts. Update of the 2001 Literature Review.

The publication "International Students: Interpersonal, Institutional and Community Impacts.  Update of the 2001 Literature Review" is an update of a 2001 literature review written by Professor Colleen Ward of Victoria University of Wellington.  It was commissioned by the Ministry of Education to inform policy development and effective planning in the area of international education, particularly with respect to full fee-paying students. The publication will be useful for researchers, providers that enrol international students and those within the wider international education community.

The literature review concludes that:
a.              Research on the impacts and benefits of international students on domestic students, host institutions and the wider community is patchy, and what there is tends to focus on the tertiary sector.
b.              The research that has been conducted internationally in this field (albeit limited) indicates that:

i   local students are often willing to engage in greater interaction with international students but that the frequency of contact between international and domestic students is low;
ii   in the classroom there have been relatively few changes in classroom practice or curriculum content by teachers in multicultural classrooms;
iii  in the wider institution there is relatively low usage by international students of international support services, and there is no evidence that international students have negative impacts on the overall academic standing of an institution; and
iv  at community level, community members have relatively positive attitudes towards international students.

c.              Institutional interventions can help to promote intercultural interactions (peer-pairing, intercultural cooperative learning strategies, residential programmes, training packages such as the ExcelL programme).
d.              Further research is needed for New Zealand to establish evidence-based practice in policy and programme development.

Copies of the literature review are available from the International Division of the Ministry of Education.  Please e- mail your request to: international.publication@minedu.govt.nz heading your email message with “Update of the 2001 Literature Review”, and including the name of the person and address to which the publication should be sent.

Jill Leaves, Genevieve Arrives

ENZ Marketing Team member Jill Burgoyne has 'hung up her hat' and finished at ENZ. Jill is intending to do the 'big OE', after first marrying partner Joe around Christmas. Jill has been a valued member of the ENZ team, and we wish her well for the future.

Her successor is Genevieve Rousseau Cung, a French Canadian with a dash of Vietnamese background! Genevieve comes to us from working with AFS, and will be a lively and enthusiastic member of ENZ - we welcome her on board.
