South American Agents Visit
The first event of next year’s ‘PACE 2007’ marketing programme is the South American Education Agents visit to New Zealand. A mixture of agents from Spanish speaking countries such as Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay will be travelling on an itinerary starting February 11th.

This is a chance for NZ institutions to promote their school or region and establish new agent relationships.

Two options for hosting the South American agents are available:

  • a two hour time slot for one institution or
  • a regional/cluster option for a number of days at a time.

The regional/cluster option allows groups to more effectively give agents the flavour of the region as well as institutional information.

Early registrations are required for organisation to get underway in December, preferably by Friday 8 December.

New Zealand Educated Brand: We Need Your Stories

You are probably aware that Education New Zealand has recently undertaken an extensive review of its ‘New Zealand Educated’ brand positioning. One of the outcomes of that review was a commitment to build a compact stock of engaging stories to underpin the ‘New Zealand Educated ‘brand.  These student-related success stories, with specially commissioned professional photography of the subjects, will be used extensively offshore to draw attention to New Zealand as an education destination.

Like most education providers, you will no doubt have some interesting success stories concerning your New Zealand or international students. We would be very grateful if you could share some details of the best of these success stories with us to promote New Zealand education generically. Our aim is to select a small group of ‘hero’ stories initially and then to gradually build up our story ‘bank’ over time. Once selected, we will be commissioning a top level portrait-oriented photographer to capture the initial subjects of the ‘hero’ stories. As you’ll appreciate, for international usage, we cannot attribute the stories to a particular institution.

To minimise the effort required on your part, we would like you to forward particularly interesting people-focused stories you have already gathered or the bones of stories that you feel are interesting but haven’t got around to writing yet. Photos of the story subjects would be appreciated if at all possible. To assist you to decide on the most appropriate stories, they should have the following characteristics:

  • They should be particularly interesting or unusual (This is subjective, of course. The question is - would you feel motivated to read about this person and their exploits?)

  • They could be about any facet of the student experience but a few that come to mind are:
    • something especially interesting, unusual or praiseworthy about one of your students or their achievements
    • special bonds developed between your students and their teachers or their hosts
    • especially creative ideas developed by your students
    • particular tutors tackling interesting and/or unusual projects
    • something special about the way you run your institution to maximise the value for, and experience of international students.
  • Rightly or wrongly, we live in a visual world where people make judgments on appearances. The subjects don’t exactly need to be fashion models but they do need to be presentable and appealing to the mainly youthful audience.

We appreciate that Christmas is fast approaching and that you will have many loose ends to tie up. However, if you are able to email through some stories prior to Christmas, we would be extremely grateful. Please send them to Kate Parlane at Kate.Parlane@educationnz.org.nz

Assuming we get the responses we need, we will be selecting the most suitable ‘hero’ stories in the New Year and getting back in touch with the successful contributors.

We look forward to your contribution.

News from China and India

  • How Chinese Employers View Overseas Educated Employees
AEI has produced a report 'The International Education Market in China - Employer Perceptions of Overseas Educated Students'. It focuses on one aspect of interviews with Chinese employers - how employers perceive overseas educated students.

A summary of the report is available at http://aei.dest.gov.au/AEI/PublicationsAndResearch/Snapshots/Default

  • China MBAs: Most Likely To Fall Short
Chinese corporate recruiters say graduates of mainland Chinese MBA programs lack workplace savvy and companies are thinking twice about employing MBA graduates straight out of study.

In China there are over 200 MBA programmes available, and the lure of high tuition fees (an MBA course can cost upwards of US$25,000) means there are a large amount of low quality courses.

The recruiters are full of praise for offshore MBA programmes though, and say “The strength of instruction that they get in these programs, plus the experience they get studying overseas, makes [these] graduates very attractive”, whereas students in Chinese MBA courses “lack confidence and have no idea how to express themselves".

  • Foreign Universities Lining up to enter India
Around 40 foreign universities, many from the U.S. and Canada, are poised to begin building branch campuses in India.

As many as 40 universities are reported to have submitted proposals to the government of Maharashtra state alone; names include Stanford University, Georgia Tech University, the University of British Columbia, McGill University, Simon Fraser University and the University of Montreal. Most are reported to be awaiting permission from the government to start building campuses, and they are said to be most interested in the area around Mumbai, capital of Maharashtra state.

Some of the planned investments are of considerable size. The Higher Colleges of Technology, a group of schools based in the United Arab Emirates, are planning to spend between $300 million and $350 million (U.S.) to build a campus in Maharashtra or Karnataka, in southern India, home to a bustling information technology industry.
