Welcome
Kia ora,
We're all getting geared up for our annual Conference in Christchurch. It's just a few weeks away so make sure you register soon or you may miss out!
2010 Conference - The Networking Opportunity of the Year
This year, Christchurch is where you’ll find the best networking opportunities in export education. With the NARIC Tertiary Admissions Workshops on August 4 & 5 (registrations are now closed), and the New Zealand International Education Conference on August 5 & 6.
Those only attending one of these events will be able to mix and mingle with the others during our official welcome at Dux de Lux on Wednesday evening. The casual atmosphere will provide you with a chance to catch up with colleagues, talk with the workshop presenters and more.
There will also be a great networking opportunity on Thursday, August 5th at our Industry Dinner. All conference delegates are invited to join the speakers, other delegates, sponsors and a group of education agents from Thailand for an evening of dining, dancing and conversation. To meet the needs of all attendees, we will have a live band for entertainment, and a quiet zone for those who prefer to chat.
Of course networking is just the icing on the cake. The Conference programme is packed with top level speakers including Hon Steven Joyce, Hon Bruce Baird, Michael T. Jones of Google, Nigel Bickle from Immigration NZ, and many more. You can see the full programme HERE.
It’s coming up soon, so don’t miss out. Multiple registrations from the same institution or organisation receive discounts, so get a group together and save on registration fees.

Learn More, Stress Less

In 2010, Education New Zealand is inviting students from around the world to ‘Learn More Stress Less’. The focus of this online promotional campaign is on how the less stressed New Zealand lifestyle helps students to succeed.
This promotion of New Zealand education on a global stage will take on many forms, including online campaigns; digital marketing on social networking platforms; as well as a presence on YouTube and at selected PACE education fairs.
The engagement platform www.learnmorestressless.com, which provides an introduction to studying and living in New Zealand, is where the advertising and campaigns will be directing interested parties. Potential students, their parents and education agents will have targeted opportunities to explore what an education in New Zealand has to offer in a visually appealing and engaging way.

Phase one of the campaign and platform went live in June, and we had our first fair presence at Ho Chi Minh city. Visitors to the fair had the opportunity to visit the site, as well as to take a ‘virtual’ mountain bike ride within New Zealand.
A variety of campaigns and promotional activities will be run over the next few months to drive students to the engagement platform; on to www.newzealandeducated.com; and ultimately through to institution profiles and websites. If you would like to find out more about the development and progress of this campaign, there will be a session about it at this year’s International Education Conference.
Media & Agent Photo Library
To meet the needs of international media writing stories about education in New Zealand, and education agents presenting the advantages of studying in our beautiful country, Education New Zealand has launched a Media & Agent Photo Library as part of the Education New Zealand website.
Users will need to register with Education New Zealand so that we can ensure only genuine media and agencies have access to the photos.
If you have professional quality photos (at least 300 dpi) of your institution, students, accommodation, activities or region you want to make available, please contact michelle.waitzman@educationnz.org.nz. All photos are tagged with the name of the institution which provided them.
Before submitting photos, please ensure that your institution owns the copyright, and has permission from anyone recognisably pictured to use the photo for marketing purposes.
Visa Processing Backlog
Immigration New Zealand has requested that ENZ distribute the following message:
You will be aware of the pressures that the centralised student processing branch in Palmerston North is currently under, and the impacts that this is having on the timeliness of student permit processing. Immigration New Zealand wants to ensure that students are able to commence or continue their course of study; and that they have the relevant permits to do so.
To achieve this, INZ is making use of resources in our other Immigration New Zealand branches. We are temporarily transferring some student applications to other branches for processing, so please do not be surprised if another branch contacts you, or your students, regarding an application.
All student permit applications must continue to be lodged with the Palmerston North branch. Palmerston North will continue to be the centralised branch for student visa/permit applications. Please do not send any applications to other branches, as they will be only be forwarded on to Palmerston North for processing/allocation and this will result in a delay.
Immigration New Zealand thanks you for your patience in this matter.
New Zealand Alumni Function, Bangkok, Thailand
When the New Zealand Education Fairs in Thailand were cancelled in early May we made a commitment to ensure continued New Zealand Education promotions in the market.
Over the next month or so a generic New Zealand Education campaign will get underway in Thailand, including print advertising in two leading newspapers, The Bangkok Post and Krungthep Thurakij, and in A day magazine.
In association with this promotion, a New Zealand Alumni Function is being held on Saturday 17 July in Bangkok. We encourage you to send this invitation link www.newzealandeducated.com/nzalumni out to your Thai Alumni so that they can attend this free event.

MoE Wants Your Internationalisation Stories
The Ministry of Education is keen to find out what intercultural and international experiences New Zealand schools are providing for their students. Hosting international students is one way of helping your students to be outward-looking and interested in the world, but there are many others.
Malaysian Scholarships in Decline
With tougher financial times hitting hard around the world, individuals and governments alike are looking for ways to cut corners in their spending. In Malaysia, it seems that higher education is one of the areas feeling the crunch.
Following recent cutbacks to subsidies helping to cover tuition fees for foreign scholars at Malaysian universities, a new announcement by Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz of the Prime Minister’s Department, has confirmed its Government will also continue to scale down on the number of scholarships given for local students to study overseas.
Preferring to concentrate more on providing opportunities to postgraduate students, the Government has now stated that undergraduate students will instead be encouraged to study at local universities.
"The intention is, firstly, to reduce expenditure in sending students overseas,” explained Minister Nazri. “Secondly, we must ensure that local universities have bright students. Why are we doubting the quality of local universities?"
This year, the number of Public Service Department (PSD) scholarships provided by the Government dropped from 2,000 to 1,500. And soon, Minister Nazri announced, through a gradual phase-out plan, there will only be 300 such scholarships awarded per year. At which point, only those students wishing to pursue postgraduate studies, or those awarded a place at an Ivy League institution in a critical field, will be supported to study overseas.
