Air New Zealand Update

vvvMany of you will be aware of the exciting announcement by Air NZ CEO, Rob Fyfe, at Conference in early August. Rob announced a commitment to stimulate international student travel to New Zealand by making $200,000 of international airfares available over the next 18 months. This allocation enables ENZ to effectively quadruple promotions involving inbound visitors such as media or agent groups, as an example.

We’re currently working with Air New Zealand on the programme, and will make details known in the first October edition of E-news.

PACE Update

New Zealand Education Promotion links
with NZ Black Caps

If you were watching the test match over the weekend you may have spotted New Zealand Education being promoted at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground. With the New Zealand Education Fair being held in Colombo on Sunday 30 August, it was a great opportunity for ENZ to leverage off the high profile event.

PACE 2009 Oversubscribed

Registrations for PACE 2009 events are now all closed. Organisation is well underway for the last two events for the year, the New Zealand Education Fair in Korea and a series of Events in China. For the first time in PACE history five events quickly became oversubscribed this year. Although we set up waiting lists, it was with regret that some folk got turned away. Next year we will work hard to secure larger venues, we also remind marketers to register their interest as early as possible to ensure confirmed attendance.

The PACE team would like to send out a big 'thank you' to those that have contributed to the raised profile of New Zealand Education offshore, and send best wishes to those that have upcoming travel planned.

The Draft PACE 2010 calendar was distributed at Conference and is available online HERE we're in the consultation phase now, so have your say on events that should be considered by contacting Sarah Cox

NCEA Accreditation in Germany

Concern was expressed during one of the Conference sessions about university entrance for German students on completion of their secondary study in New Zealand.

Please note that NZQA is working with German authorities to provide authoritative guidance on what subject combination and credit number most closely aligns with Abitur. NZQA will be publishing guidance for schools in the near future; the communication will also be distributed through E-news.

$39 Student Standby Air Fares Tipped

(via Otago Daily Times)

Air New Zealand is planning to launch a campaign offering University of Otago students special standby fares to and from Dunedin. It is understood the airline plans to introduce trial $39 standby fares next month aimed specifically at the student market.

An airline spokesman confirmed a deal aimed at offering students discounted travel had been discussed in partnership with the university, but details were still being finalised. An announcement was expected within two weeks, he said.

Air New Zealand deputy chief executive Norm Thompson, who was in Dunedin as a guest speaker for the Otago-Southland branch of the Institute of Directors on Tuesday night, outlined details of the plans. Under the scheme, which is expected to be trialled over a month, students would be able to fly anywhere in New Zealand for $39, he said. It is unclear whether the deal would be open to polytechnic students, or other universities.

Air New Zealand's Tasman Pacific general manager, Glen Sowry, told the Otago Daily Times in June the airline was in talks with the University of Otago about a partnership involving discounted student travel on low-demand flights. The scheme could be similar to Grab A Seat, where the airline sold limited reduced fares, he said.

Dunedin International Airport chief executive John McCall said student standby fares were offered by Air New Zealand and Ansett New Zealand in the early to mid-1990s, but the practice was no longer promoted. He welcomed the move as a way of filling vacant seats on aircraft and boosting passenger numbers. If the new campaign was similar to the previous system, students "targeting" certain flights would have a good chance of getting cheap fares.

University of Otago School of Business associate professor David Timothy Duval said standby was a strategy used by airlines to allocate seats assigned to passengers "but who, for one reason or another, don't show up".

Otago University Students Association president Edwin Darlow said while he was not aware of the campaign he supported anything that made it easier for students to travel. Otago Polytechnic Students Association acting president Meegan Cloughley said while the proposal sounded "fantastic", she hoped it would be open to all students in the region.
