In 2006 China was selected as a Depth Market for the New Zealand international education industry. Due to the large number of education agents in China, Education New Zealand developed the New Zealand Specialist Agent Group for Hong Kong in early 2008, for China in mid 2009 and for Taiwan in late 2009, to provide a means by which effective agents can easily be identified by students and industry. At the same time, it aims to increase the effectiveness and commitment of those Agents promoting New Zealand education.
The Market Profiles for China, Hong Kong and Taiwan have been made available online and can assist with the setting of marketing strategies and decision making around event attendance. The latest Visa and Export Education Levy Statistics are sourced from The Department of Labour and The Ministry of Education respectively and are available on the Statistics page.

Study in New Zealand Handbook, August 2011 Support is being provided to Wellington based company, Nihao NZ, to produce a Chinese language handbook promoting education in New Zealand. The print run will be 25,000, these will be distributed in Mainland China, via the New Zealand Pavilion at the CIEET and CCIEE Education Fairs, and domestically throughout New Zealand. Beijing International Education Expo 2011, 17 - 19 June 2011 As a comprehensive international event approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education, Beijing International Education Expo (BIEE) is a high-impact international education expo. The fair has been running for 7 years now, the latest statistics are for the 2009 fair which attracted 458 exhibitors from 32 countries, 60,000 visitors were reported to attend the three day event. A generic New Zealand Education booth promoted New Zealand study options, the New Zealand Embassy was one of a list of Embassies supporting the event. 10,000 visitors were estimated to have attended this event. In-flight Magazine Advertising, 2 May - 20 June 2011 Study in New Zealand advertisements and editorial content will feature in 11 consecutive editions from May to July of China Southern Airlines' 'Elite' in-flight magazine. China Southern is China's largest airline and the 5th largest airline in the world. Elite Magazine is printed weekly and distributed on all domestic flights. The timing of this promotion works in very well with China Southern Airline's promotion of their new direct flights from Guangzhou to Auckland. China Mission, 11 – 21 March (PACE 2011) 42 New Zealand institutions participated in the two week PACE China Mission, which was the first time such a large New Zealand education delegation had travelled so extensively around China. The participants, a mixture of Tertiary, Secondary and Junior School representatives, participated in seven events in Beijing, Tianjin, Hangzhou and Guangzhou. The Mission was mixture of New Zealand Education Agent Seminars, New Zealand Education Fairs, and large International Fairs. The exposure for New Zealand and the support that we were collectively able to provide to large agencies in the Chinese market was invaluable in terms of their returned promotion of New Zealand Education. Overall we were very pleased with the reaction to our events, especially in the south.
Southern Metropolis Daily (Guangzhou), Newspaper Article, February 2011 The third article about New Zealand Education appeared in the Southern Metropolis Daily on 17 January, it can be read in full HERE . The information about New Zealand mentions Silver Fern Visas, which were designed to bring young skilled people into New Zealand, the approval rate of student visas and the upcoming PACE Education Fairs in Guangzhou. The student website, www.newzealandeducated.com is also mentioned. The daily print run is 1 million.
Waitangi Day Supplement Promotion, February 2011 Both Chinese and English versions of a NZ Inc promotion appeared in the Saturday 6 February editions of the Chinese-language "China Times" and English-language "China Post". The "China Times" has a circulation of circa 500,000 daily and the "China Post" of some 200,000-250,000 daily. The supplement appeared in full page full colour form in the newspapers. The education section of the promotion included the 'welcoming' brand image, student website URL, New Zealand Educated logo and a few paragraphs emphasising our welcoming approach to international students and strength in Education, referencing recent OECD PISA results.

Taipei Railway Ad Campaign, late December 2010 - late February 2011 A ‘Study in New Zealand’ billboard advertisement will be prominently located in the lobby of the Taipei Railway Station (TRS), which is expected to have 6.6 million visitors over the two month period. The TRS connects the railway system, Taipei MRT subway system and the Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) system, it is the busiest station in Taiwan. During this time, 70 ‘Study in New Zealand’ posters will also appear inside the local train and the limited express train carriages from Keelung to Hsinchu. The trains stop at 26 towns and cities in northern Taiwan. The recorded number of local train passengers on the Keelung to Hsinchu line in January was 11,546,028, in February this increased to 13,704,339. These winter months were purposely chosen to attract the increased number of travellers who are travelling for Chinese New Year (2-6 February) and winter vacation (mid-January to early February), during this time seat reservations on both the railway system and THSR are fully occupied.

NiHao NZ (Hello NZ) Publication Support has been given to a New Zealand produced, Chinese Language publication called NiHao NZ (Hello NZ). The directory provides general information about life in New Zealand, with a particular emphasis on Tourism, Education and Living. An online version complements the hard copy versions which we recently distributed at the October CCIEE Fairs in China. The publishers also produced the Education chapter as a stand-alone item for us to distribute to the VIP guests at the New Zealand Education Function at the Shanghai World Expo in June 2010, it can also be read online .
Southern Metropolis Daily (Guangzhou), November 2010 – July 2011 An on-going PR contract with this large newspaper in one of our targeted secondary cities has been arranged to raise the profile of New Zealand Education. Photos and feature articles promoting New Zealand Education regularly feature in the Southern Metropolis Daily which has a print run of 1 million. All articles also appear online on the Southern Metropolis Daily website.
Airport Billboard, Chongqing, 18 October 2010 to 17 October 2011 A 4.5m wide by 2.4m high billboard featuring the Personal brand value and "Study in New Zealand" in Chinese has been erected at Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport for a period of one year. The annual foot traffic at this airport is estimated to be 16 million for 2010. The Chinese body text is 在新西兰,我们鼓励学生向他人学习的同时也独立思考;我们个性化的教育方式意味着每个人都可以得到与老师和同学更多的交流,使得他们思维开阔并全面发掘自身潜力 which explains that a New Zealand education encourages independent thinking, and provides interaction between teachers and students which helps students reach their full potential and helps them prepare for their future. China Fairs, 16 - 27 October 2010 (PACE 2010) A large blue New Zealand pavilion featuring 20 New Zealand providers, ENZ, Immigration NZ and ANZ Bank was organised for 4 CCIEE Education Fairs in Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai and Chengdu. Tertiary Education Minister, Hon Steven Joyce, visited the pavilion in Beijing and was impressed with the NZ Inc approach of the pavilion. Over 32,000 visitors came through the CCIEE Beijing Fair over two the days.
Jiangsu Education Expo 2010, 16 - 18 September 2010 Organised by the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education (JPDE), this education expo was held in the city of Nanjing. Jiangsu province is one of the most educated regions in China, the GDP per-capita ranks among the top 10 regions in China. The fair enabled domestic and international educational institutions and country representatives to promote their services.
Downtown Billboard, Chengdu, 26 June - 25 August 2010 A 8m x 16m New Zealand Educated branded billboard with the message 留学新西兰 (Study in New Zealand) will be erected on the corners of Chunxi Road South and Upper Easter Avenue in Chengdu. The street corner has a daily footfall of 800,000 people and 100,000 cars.
Shanghai World Expo, 15 June 2010 Two New Zealand Education promotional functions have been organised to leverage off the New Zealand promotions at the Shanghai World Expo. The first is a formal lunch for officials and NZSA Agents, and the second is a Cocktail Function for industry members to network with officials and agents. More information is available HERE

Beijing Youth Daily article, April 2010 The Beijing Youth Daily has a circulation of about 600,000, an article about the benefits of a New Zealand education appeared in the 20 April edition, and can be read in full on the BYD website HERE . The article goes on to summarize the points students to take arrange in order to study in New Zealand. A reference to www.newzealandeducated.com is included in the article.
Chinese Agents & Media Inbound Visit, April 2010 Fourteen visitors (12 education agents and 2 media representatives) visited New Zealand in mid April. Travelling on four separate itineraries had them visiting institutions in various locations throughout New Zealand. To get a taste of New Zealand, adventures along the way included a traditional Maori welcome, a trip to see glow worms, indoor rock climbing and other popular tourist stops.

Taiwan Agent Seminar & Student Workshops, March 2009 (PACE 2009) New Zealand Education promotional events were held in the three key Taiwanese cities of Taipei, Kaohsiung and Taichung. 17 New Zealand providers took part in the events. 140 families attended the student workshop in Taipei, 70 families in Kaohsiung. For the agent only sessions, 22 agencies attended in Taipei, 16 agents from 13 agencies came along in Kaohsiung; and 10 agents met with the New Zealand delegation in Taichung.
Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall Station Billboard, Taipei (22 March - 22 May) This Study in New Zealand Billboard is situated at Exit 2 of the Taipei MRT (Mass Rapid Transit subway system), Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall Station. The dimensions of the billboard are 1.82 m high x 3.88 m wide. The estimate footfall at this station for the March to May period was 3,644,000. The design of the billboard includes the 'Lively' New Zealand Educated brand image, the New Zealand Educated logo and URL and a Chinese phrase which roughly translates to "Studying in New Zealand is as free/relaxing as breathing"

Hong Kong Agent Seminar, March 2010 (PACE 2010) As part of the 2010 North Asian Mission, the three organised events in Hong Kong were a group lunch, the Hong Kong Agent Seminar and a group debrief Dinner. 11 New Zealand institutions took part, plus staff from ENZ, NZTE and Immigration NZ. 32 agents from 25 agencies attended the Agent Seminar.
China Fairs, March 2010 (PACE 2010) A large blue New Zealand pavilion featuring 15 New Zealand providers, ENZ, Immigration NZ and ANZ Bank was organised for the large two day CIEET Fair in Beijing and CIEET Fair in Chongqing. 27,000 visitors attended the fair in Beijing and 2,500 visitors were counted at the Chongqing Fair.

Hong Kong Inbound Agent Visit, March, 2010
A group of four education agents visited New Zealand in early March on a ten day familiarsation visit in conjunction with Air NZ. As well as visiting a good range of institutions, agents experienced the famous Shotover Jet, and returned home happy to promote New Zealand as a top educational choice.

Downtown Animated Billboard, Chongqing, (February/March 2010) A large Billboard promoting New Zealand Education will attract the attention of the 300,000 daily visitors to Jeifangbei Square in downtown Chongqing. The billboard features the 'First Light Thinking' New Zealand Educated DVD and background music, and has a Chinese language voiceover which enthusiastically recommends studying in New Zealand. The clips end with a brief screen of text advertising the New Zealand pavilion at the CIEET Education Fair in Chongqing on 16 March.

China Fairs, October 2009 (PACE 2009)
A large green New Zealand pavilion featuring 14 New Zealand providers, ENZ, INZ and ANZ Bank was organised for the large two day CCIEE (China Center for Intl Educational Exchange) Fair in Beijing. 35,000 visitors attended the fair. Following the event in Beijing, a New Zealand Education Fair was held in Nanjing, featuring seven New Zealand institutions, ENZ, INZ and Air New Zealand, there were approximately 200 visitors.
Beijing Jiangsu Media promo (July-December 2009) Media Campaign: 8 articles to be published in 8 newspapers and 4 online media (sohu.com, sina.com, qq.com, and xinhuanet). The newspapers have large readership numbers, such as the Yangzi Evening News with 1,800,000 and Beijing Youth Daily with 600,000 per issue. Each paper will publish one particular article and each online media all 8 articles.
Sichuan Media Campaign (April – December 2009) Huaxi Cosmopolitan Daily has a circulation of 1.15 million papers every day The total readership number is around 5 million people, covering 20-odd cities in Sichuan province including Chengdu and Chongqing. This campaign consists of 9 articles on various aspects of study in New Zealand.
Bus Advertisement Promotion - Taiwan, June/July 2009 The New Zealand Educated branding and www.newzealandeducated.com website were promoted on 16 buses in 8 different routes in Taipei and Taipei County. A 180-second looped clip of the New Zealand Educated DVD played on the buses' TV screens.

New Zealand Educated Blogger and Media Tour - China/NZ, May 2008 A Student Blog Competition was undertaken, winning students from Peking University, Fudan University and Sun Yatsen University wrote blogs on the topic of “New Zealand through My Eyes”, and posted their articles onto the official blog (Sohu.com). Selected winners, together with journalists from three major Chinese media then toured New Zealand to get an understanding of the country and education.

Hong Kong Bus Shelter Campaign Between April and the May 2007, a bus shelter poster campaign was run in Hong Kong The campaign was deployed on 110 panels across 55 bus shelter locations in high density areas of Kowloon and Hong Kong Island.
Student Scholarship Competition Leveraging off the Te Papa Cultural Exhibition Tour (CDIP) from March - May 2007 Cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan, and Guangzhou In total 8 prizes of 3 weeks English Language tuition in New Zealand were made available. These were allocated to two winners from each of the four cities. 40,000 competition flyers were distributed to people visiting the exhibition Over 1,000 online entries were received. The visitor numbers to the www.newzealandeducated.com China site doubled during the competition entry period.

Inbound Agents Tour 11 Chinese Agents were selected based on their significant contribution to inbound Chinese student numbers or on their potential/capacity to become a significant agent in the New Zealand market. They were invited to participate in a familiarisation trip to New Zealand, visit New Zealand educational institutions and experience the wonderful opportunities New Zealand has to offer international students.
CCIEE Fair, October 2006 (PACE 2006) Cities: Beijing, Harbin, Chengdu, Shanghai, Nanjing and Shenzhen Exhibitors: 472 (including 30 Chinese exhibitors) from 27 countries, 12 New Zealand providers (all 6 cities) Visitors: Beijing: 30,000 visitors and Shanghai: 20,000. Approximately 80% of visitors to these fairs were interested in graduate or postgraduate study.
