In 2006 Brazil was selected as one of five Composite Depth Markets for the New Zealand international education industry. In mid 2009, Education New Zealand developed the New Zealand Specialist Agent Group for Brazil (and then for Chile and Colombia) to provide a means by which effective agents can easily be identified by students and industry. At the same time, it aims to increase the effectiveness and commitment of those Agents promoting New Zealand education.
Brazil's Market Profile has been made available online and can assist with the setting of marketing strategies and decision making around event attendance. The latest Visa and Export Education Levy Statistics are sourced from The Department of Labour and The Ministry of Education respectively and are available on the Statistics page.

New Zealand Education Guide, May 2011 A booklet, 36 pages long, specifically tailored to the South American market, was created to generically promote New Zealand education. This guide aims to provide education agents with support selling material that they can display at their agencies and distribute to their customers, as well as to be offered to students attending international education events. A total of 20,000 copies in both Portuguese and Spanish versions were printed for distribution throughout Brazil, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Columbia. MFAT have kindly contributed support funding to this project.

La Tercera Newspaper Advertisement, Chile, April 2011 The 27 April edition of La Tercera will focussed on “International Studies”, including the experience of studying in another country, contact with new cultures, learning a new language and gaining knowledge for the job market. This particular issue was an excellent opportunity for us to align a half page ad with the very relevant editorial content. The New Zealand Education advertisement included the Adventurous brand image with text in Spanish about the opportunities in New Zealand. 264,522 readers are estimated for this Wednesday edition.
FPP Tour, Colombia, 9 - 12 April 2011 Cities: Bogota & Medellin New Zealand Education will be promoted via a generic booth at the two largest Colombian cities on the FPP Tour of Colombia. In the past our booth has been very popular among the visitors in search of information about language, high school, and tertiary courses.
Becas Chile Fair, 9 & 10 April 2011 British Council, BecasChile, CampusFrance and DAAD, were part of the organising committee which held a Becas Scholarship focussed fair in early April. The event was called “Expo-EuroPosgrados Becas Chile” it was held at the Estación Mapocho Cultural Centre in Santiago. New Zealand education was represented by ENZ's local representatives, education agency NZ Global.

ExpoBELTA 2011, São Paulo,19 & 20 March 2011 BELTA is the Brazilian Agents' Association, their annual International Education Fair is held in São Paulo. Typically up to 100 exhibitors from 40 countries take part, and 7,000 visitors are expected over the two days. Students will have the opportunity to learn more about studying in New Zealand at the generic New Zealand booth. BELTA's magazine, titled Ei!, is published both in hard and soft copies to leverage off the event. A full page colour advertisement will promote New Zealand Education in the magazine.
FPP Tour, Brazil 15 - 27 March 2011 Cities: Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba, Porto Alegre, Brasilia & São Paulo New Zealand Education will be promoted via a generic booth at all six of the events on the FPP Tour in Brazil. In the past our booth has been very popular among the visitors in search of information about language, high school, and tertiary courses. In 2010 the FPP Tour united 62 exhibitors, including Brazilian and international institutions, governmental and education agencies.
Veja Magazine, February 2011 An interesting article in Brazil's Veja Magazine titled Tudo sobre intercâmbio (Everything about Studying Abroad) had a strong focus on the benefits of Studying in New Zealand. The article reported that about 70,000 paulistanos (people from Sao Paulo) studied abroad last year and provided a summary on education in Canada, US, France and New Zealand. A short profile of Brazilian student Joiozo Larissa, 16, who had studied in New Zealand for a year includes the quote "I learned to look after myself, I met wonderful people and places. I loved this trip."
Época Magazine Article, November 2010 Published by Globo Publishers (Editora Globo), this weekly magazine has a print run of 420,000, the online version of the magazine has 13 million visitors per month. An article in the early November edition is titled Você quer estudar fora? (You want to Study Abroad?) and profiles two Brazilian students studying in New Zealand, it reports that 15,000 students, aged between 15 and 19, left Brazil in 2010 and that the advantage of studying in New Zealand is the wide variety of subjects on offer. New Zealand Specialist Agent Training, September 2010 City: Sao Paulo, Brazil 25 Agents attending the training, 10 have gone on to become New Zealand Specialist Agents.
Viagem e Turismo, Magazine Advertising, August 2010 A full page full colour print advertisement promoting New Zealand Education covered the inside back cover of the recent Australia & New Zealand Special Edition of the Brazilian Viagem e Turismo (Travel & Tourism) Magazine. The print run is 135,000 copies, circulation 90,000 copies, the number of readers is expected to exceed 267,000. The magazine has been voted three times by the European Commission as the “Best Magazine of Brazil”. The advertisement included Portuguese text which made specific reference to the Times Higher Education university rankings and New Zealand’s ‘Most Peaceful Country’ ranking on the Global Peace Index.
ExpoIngles, Santiago, Chile, 6 & 7 October 2010 This fair is organised by the Chilean Agents Association, Association of Representatives in Educational and International Exchanges (AREI). Held at the CasaPiedra Convention Center, the two day fair is expected to attract 4,000 visitors. A generic New Zealand Education stand provided visitors with information about studying in New Zealand.
ICEF Latin America Workshop, Sao Paulo, September 29 – October 01, 2010 ENZ supported and participated in the annual ICEF Workshop for Latin America, held in Sao Paulo. Agents from the following countries attended the event: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. A generic seminar about New Zealand Education, particularly focussed on how Agents should sell a New Zealand education, was held as part of the event.

ExpoEstudios Chile, April 2010 (PACE 2010) City: Santiago, Chile ExpoEstudios is a student fair organised by a group of major education agencies in Chile. An 'NZ Inc' generic booth was staffed by ENZ and the New Zealand Embassy in Chile. 20 New Zealand institutions (Universities, Polytechnics, High schools and Language Schools) participated at the event, making New Zealand the country with the largest representation at the fair. ExpoEstudios attracted over 5,200 prospective students aged 16 – 35.
New Zealand Education Agent Seminar, April 2010 (PACE 2010) City: Bogota, Colombia Six New Zealand institutions took part in the Seminar held in Bogota, and met with 32 agents from 21 agencies, as well as staff from Immigration New Zealand and the Colombian Ministry of Education. While the representatives of NZ institutions attended a seminar by the Colombian MoE, ENZ offered education agents a seminar followed by a session about student visas presented by INZ. After the opening seminars, Institutions had the opportunity to hold private meetings with the local education agents. The New Zealand Ambassador from Chile and the New Zealand Education Counsellor attended the networking evening which followed the seminar
Yázigi Travel Student Fair, March 2010 City: São Jose dos Campos, São Paulo, Brazil ENZ held a one-hour seminar for prospective students at a weekend student fair organised by Yázigi Travel. Yázigi is a New Zealand Specialist Agency.

ExpoBelta, March 2010 City: São Paulo The Brazilian Educational & Language Travel Association (BELTA) is the Brazilian Agents’ Association, BELTA hold their fairs on an annual basis, usually in March. Exhibitors: 100 including 82 representatives from Brazil and International organisations from 40 countries. The generic New Zealand Education booth was popular and attracted many prospective students visiting the fair. A 30-minute seminar with general information about education in New Zealand had a good audience. Visitors: ExpoBelta received 6,870 visitors.

Digital Advertising, March & May 2010 A company called Elemedia, has been contracted to undertake an advertising campaign via LED screens in universities and gyms. The initial trial was undertaken in São Paulo in March, a larger campaign which includes the cities of São Paulo, Rio, Porto Alegre and Recife will get underway in May via 128 screens located at universities and 58 screens in gyms. The New Zealand Educated vignette, a crop from the First Light Thinking DVD, will show a total of 321,520 times over a one month period.

Brazil Inbound Agent Visit, May, 2010 As part of the Air New Zealand programme, Education New Zealand hosted 7 Brazilian education agents in mid May. The agents were divided into two groups; the itineraries took them to various locations and as well as visiting a range of educational institutions, they also had visits to vineyards and even a flying lesson! When asked would they promote New Zealand to future students, the response was “Yes. It is a wonderful industry, people, education, quality of life and fun!”

Expo Estudiante, Colombia, October 2009 Education New Zealand had a generic booth at the 2009 Colombia events in Bogota and Medellin and also participated in the associated Agents' workshop. Part of the visit to Colombia was also to attend a National Educational Forum called Educational Revolution, organised by the Ministry Of National Education, meeting the Alliances Round in Bogota and Universities and Tertiary institutions from Colombia. The main goal of these visits was to encourage Internationalization, E-learning and Bilingualism. A presentation was also given at the Ministry of National Education in Bogota covering the NZ Education system and promotion of the country as a study destination.
STB Santos, September 2009 Education New Zealand attended and presented at a seminar which was organised by STB Santos, one of the large education agencies in São Paulo.
ICEF Latin America, September 2009 City: São Paulo The Education New Zealand staff member ran a Study in New Zealand presentation and met with a large range of Latin American education agents. At this event there were 110 educators representing 85 education institutions from 17 countries, and 137 agents representing 110 agencies from 14 countries. Further information can be found HERE
Casa Thomas Jefferson Fair, August 2009 City: Brasilia New Zealand as well as USA, Canada and Ireland were represented at this fair. In addition, STB, CI, Experimento, BEX, Information Brazil and other large education agencies attended. A presentation was given by Education New Zealand and attended by 80 people.
NZ Global - Agent Agreement 09/10 NZ Global was contracted again in 09/10 to generically represent New Zealand and promote the country as a destination for Students who have qualified for Scholarships awarded by the Chilean Government.

FORBEI, April 2009 City: São Joao del-Rei The 2nd Brazilian Forum on International Education was an initiative set up to discuss this subject through the viewpoint of various sectors and agents related to the Educational field in Brazil. The aim was to create a setting where the educational and professional benefits resulting from study abroad programs could be discussed, the performance of Brazilian institutions and organizations that act in the field of International Education be improved and where the concepts and practices in the field of International Educational in Brazil could be improved and developed.
ExpoIngles Chile, April 2009 (PACE 2009) ExpoIngles is a student fair organised by the Chilean Agents' Association, AREI, with a strong influence from the member agencies. An 'NZ Inc' generic booth was staffed by ENZ and the New Zealand Embassy in Chile. 13 New Zealand institutions (Universities, Polytechnics, High schools and Language Schools) were part of the large, impressive New Zealand pavilion. The fair attracted students and prospective students aged 16 – 35.

Breakfast function/Agent training, February 2009 This function was organised by Education New Zealand, Australian Education International and Qantas and was held in São Paulo. 57 agents from 35 agencies attended the event.
NZ Global - Agent Agreement 08/09 Education New Zealand contracted an in-country agent, NZ Global, to generically represent New Zealand and promote the country as a destination for Students who have qualified for Scholarships awarded by the Chilean Government. NZ Global also represent Education New Zealand where necessary in ongoing consultations with the Fund.

Stakeholder Events Education New Zealand attended and presented at the Yazigi Congress, the Pride-Viagense e Intercâmbio event in Salvador city, the Gran Via Turismo e Intercâmbio event at the Anchieta School, one of the best High schools in Salvador and the Yazigi Internexus event in Indaiatuba.
Viagem e Turismo Advertisement This is the most important travel magazine in Brazil, and a special edition was published just for New Zealand and Australia. A half page advertisement was placed in this publication.
AMCHAM (American Chamber of Commerce) Mailout Via the AMCHAM membership of NZTE SãoPaulo, ENZ was given access to the membership database in order to perform a mail drop. The database was carefully mined to target those members with interests in education and other key industries such as tourism and agribusiness. In the end, 1,154 AMCHAM contacts were sent a fold-out Portuguese flyer with generic information on study in New Zealand.
FPP Media Events, September 2007 FPP Edu-Media organised a September fair series targeting five Brazilian cities. FPP Edu-Media invited Education New Zealand to attend the fair series. It was decided to focus only on attending the São Paulo and Salvador fairs. BEX Fair, August 2007 City: Brasilia Organised by BEX, who is one of the largest Education Agencies in Brazil Exhibitors: ENZ's NZTE representative in Brazil, British Council, Fullbright USA, and a number of local businesses with interests in the Brazilian international student market Visitors: 1000. Education New Zealand gave a presentation on New Zealand’s Education system which attracted over 70 people.
Alphe Latin America, March 2007 The first ever Alphe Latin America Agent workshop event took place in São Paulo, Brazil. 61 educators and 125 agents attended the event, a generic booth represented New Zealand education.
Portuguese Brochure Included in the Depth Strategy for Brazil was the design and printing of 5,000 Study in New Zealand brochures (4 pages) for distribution at education fairs and other events.
Inbound Agents Tour As part of PACE 2007, four Brazilian Agents were selected based on their significant contribution to inbound Brazilian student numbers or on their potential/capacity to become a significant agent in the New Zealand market. The agents were invited to New Zealand for a ten-day familiarisation visit with the aim to help maintain Brazilian agents’ enthusiasm for the New Zealand’s education product. This tour enabled them to learn about New Zealand’s culture and environment and visit secondary school, ITPs, and English Language institutions in Auckland, Christchurch and Timaru.
